Lots of Pictures

I’ve just uploaded hundreds of pictures to my photo page. I’m not a pro like some, I just snap pictures. :) Usually I don’t even take the time to go through and delete the ugly ones. I upload my pictures for backup purposes more than anything.

Hehe. This is extremely funny. Somebody posted a prank about a high school student getting detention for using firefox. It ended up on slashdot. Actually, It was a hoax.

btw, the school district in question is only like five minutes from my place.

Want to play tag?

Filed Under (Misc.) by Kirby Witmer on 27-09-2007

As I mentioned before, I upgraded my Blog to the latest version of Wordpress, which includes a new feature called tagging*. I also noticed they had a cool utility to convert your categories to tags, which I proceeded to do. Big mistake. Not only did it convert all my categories into tags, it removed the categories, and categorized all my posts with the default category. And I couldn’t find an undo feature anywhere**. Hmm… now what? So what I did for now is added the following lines to my .htaccess file.

Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule /category/ http://blog.kirb.com [R]

So now what happens is that when someone accesses one of my now non-existant categories it redirects them to the home page instead of giving them a Not Found page. Ideally it should redirect them to the tag instead, but I couldn’t figure out how to make that work. If anyone knows how to do that, let me know.

*Tagging is not a new idea, in fact it has become hugely popular. This is just the first time Wordpress includes it by default.
**You say its called backups? What’s that?

UPDATE: I’m now getting an error “mod_rewrite: maximum number of internal redirects reached” I’m not sure if its related to this change or not, but I have disabled it in the meantime.

Upgraded to Wordpress 2.3

Filed Under (Misc.) by Kirby Witmer on 25-09-2007

I just upgraded this blog to Wordpress 2.3 and upgraded a bunch of plugins. My theme wasn’t compatible with the new version of Wordpress therefore I have a ugly temporary one up until I find one that I like. I know, you are thinking that… “this blog is always under construction, and why doesn’t this idiot just leave good enough alone?” Ummm… you have a point.

Another Reason not to eat Chinese

Stomping on garlic with your shoes on is apparently not the correct way to prepare food. The Rockland County health department hit the Great China Buffet restaurant with two violations after someone took pictures of an employee stomping on a bowl of garlic with his boots in an alley. The man alerted health inspectors.”I go back there, and the guy’s stepping on garlic,” said Dan Barreto, who used to eat at the restaurant. “There he was just jumping up and down on it, smashing it up, having a good time.”

That’s just sick. I’m no Chinese food fan, and this will only increase my distaste for it. Not that McDonald’s is any better. ;)

Help the Environment

I just received this email from my credit card company.

You can protect your private account information and help out the environment by enrolling in eStatements, which are:

* Secure. No more worrying about your statement being intercepted or getting lost in the mail.
* Easy to Access. They are electronic statements that are available online. You will have access to up to 7 years of past statement history.
* Free! They are available anytime, anywhere. Print only the statements you want.
* Environmentally friendly. Think of the paper and the trees you will save by switching to paperless statements!

Ahhh.. sounds like a good plan. Save the environment! Its safe! Its easy to use! and best of all its FREE!! I mean, Why wouldn’t you sign up for e-statements? Nonsense. The biggest underlining reason why the credit card companies want you sign up for e-statements is so they can fill their pockets with a few extra bucks. Think about it, it saves them 32 cents more or less on every statement that they can email. Not to mention the amount of time it saves them by not having to print and send them. They even try to con you into thinking that if I don’t sign up for e-statements I won’t be able to view my statements online, which is not true.

Thanks, but I’ll pass.

P.S. Its not that I mind getting paperless statements. Actually, what really irritates me is the very idea that they think I am naive enough to think I’m doing a huge service to the environment, when in reality I’m just filling their already bulging wallets.
